PFP Candidate Wants Same-Sex Marriage on 2010 Ballot

While most of the Democrats and Republican gubernatorial candidates are opposing same-sex marriage rights and the legalization of marijuana, Stewart Alexander has placed these two important issues at the center of his campaign. Alexander says the best means to achieve same-sex marriage rights and to support legalizing marijuana is to support a political party and the candidates of that party that has a strong record of support on both issues, “that is the Peace and Freedom Party.”

Last week, Stewart A. Alexander launched his campaign to become the next Governor of California calling for the legalization of same-sex marriages and the legalization of marijuana. Stewart Alexander is one of three gubernatorial candidates representing Peace and Freedom Party, the only socialist party on the California ballot.

Stewart Alexander has been on the political scene for nearly 30 years; working for the Florida Consumer Action Network in the mid 80s and running as a candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles in 1989. Alexander was a candidate for California Lieutenant Governor in 2006 and was the National Vice Presidential Nominee for Socialist Party USA in 2008. Presently, Stewart Alexander is a member of the Peace and Freedom Party and the California State Organizer for Socialist Party USA.

While most of the Democrats and Republican gubernatorial candidates are opposing same-sex marriage rights and the legalization of marijuana, Stewart Alexander has placed these two important issues at the center of his campaign. The Peace and Freedom Party has always supported the human and civil rights of all, without regard to sexual orientation.

Stewart Alexander has been sharply critical of his Democratic and Republican rivals; Alexander has accused California Attorney General Jerry Brown, the Democratic front-runner, of changing his position to support same-sex marriage rights only to capture the mounting public support and votes that were opposed to Proposition 8. All of the Republican gubernatorial candidates are openly opposed to same-sex marriages.

In August, a summit meeting of 75 activist representing dozens of organization met to discuss means to repeal Proposition 8 and to maintain support for the movement to achieve same-sex marriage rights and equal rights in California; the event was entitled “Working Together for Equality.” Presently, there are several groups circulating petitions to have an initiative on the 2010 California ballot to support same-sex marriages.

The road ahead in more difficult regarding the legalization of marijuana; Jerry Brown strongly opposed legalizing marijuana and has a record of not enforcing California laws to protect medical marijuana dispensaries that operate within legal guidelines. Jerry Brown, to include all of the Republican gubernatorial candidates, is opposed to the legalization of marijuana. Recent polls indicate that more than 50 percent of public favors the legalization of marijuana.

According to the Associated Press, “A new Obama administration policy loosening guidelines on federal prosecution of medical marijuana on Monday signaled to users in California and elsewhere that they had less to fear from federal agents but still left their suppliers to contend with a tangled mesh of state laws and regulations.” Jerry Brown had no comments regarding these new federal guidelines.

Stewart Alexander says the best means to achieve same-sex marriage rights and to support legalizing marijuana is to support a political party and the candidates of that party that has a strong record of support on both issues, “that is the Peace and Freedom Party.” The Peace and Freedom Party will have a full slate of candidates on the California ballot in 2010.
