Baltimore police, including the Homicide Department, along with other agencies, raided the home of Baltimore activists Larry Egbert and Ellen Barfield on Powers St. in Hampden, as well as the Maryland Peace House, which houses the offices of Physicians for Social Responsibility, Veterans for Peace, and Power Inside.
Details are still coming in, but Baltimore police conducted two raids on activist homes and spaces today. The door to the Maryland Peace House was apparently breached with a battering ram(UPDATE: while battering rams were present at both raids, sources indicate that they were not used), and the office space shared by Veterans for Peace and Physicians for Social Responsibility was thoroughly searched. Another raid took place at the Hampden home shared by local activists Ellen Barfield (a member of Veterans for Peace) and Larry Egbert (part of Physicians for Social Responsibility). The investigation is reported to involve homicide charges as well as other charges under the RICO Act, potentially connected to Larry Egbert's involvement with the Final Exit Network, a group advocated for the legalization of assisted suicide.
However, and given that many of the individuals and organizations targeted by the raids were also known to be under extensive surveillance by the Maryland State Police (see
the ACLU's No Spying page for more information), it's unclear at this point in time whether political considerations were also involved in determining the target and methods of the raid. Please post updates below!
UPDATE: According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, this is in connection with
a case in Georgia, and Dr. Egbert has been arrested and charged. According to the
article : "Authorities have charged four people, two from the Atlanta area, for their part in the alleged assisted suicide of a 58-year-old Cumming man last June….Dr. Lawrence D. Egbert, 81, of Baltimore, was also arrested, said GBI spokesman John Bankhead. Nicholas Alec Sheridan, 60, also of Baltimore, has been charged yet remains at-large. The four are alleged to be members of the Final Exit Network, Bankhead said. They’ve been charged with assisted suicide, tampering with evidence and a violation of Georgia’s RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) Act."
