Sharon Black, co-coordinator Nat’l Network to Stop Foreclosures & Evictions, stated,“We will be calling on the Mayor and Baltimore City Council to do every thing possible to address the tremendous hardship that city residents face. January 12, will mark the first council meeting of the new year.

“Today’s announcements that unemployment is now at 7.2%, it’s highest in 15 years along with the pronouncements that there will be even more significant job losses in the next few months make our campaign urgent.

“The economic downturn, which many are now referring to as a depression, calls for innovative solutions that address the problems of foreclosures, evictions, utility shut-offs, joblessness and hunger.

“We are asking City government to among many things consider: A moratorium on foreclosures; calling on the Sheriff’s office to extend their holiday moratorium on foreclosures and evictions for the winter months; to call on banks and lenders directly to halt foreclosure proceedings; and to urge the Public Service Commission and BGE to halt shut offs during the winter months.

"We are calling on every just minded and compassionate Council member to join with us in reviving Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s movement for "Jobs or Income Now!"
“Foreclosures, evictions, joblessness and utility shutoffs strain the city’s already overburdened infrastructure. It affects not only those who are its direct victims; it also cost the city additional resources and impacts community businesses and the quality of life in our neighborhoods.”
