The Financial Crisis in Biblical and Theological Perspective

The owners of capital started to create a bubble in the financial markets through various kinds of speculation in order to drive up the returns by derivatives, options etc, creating Casino Capitalism de-linked from the real economy.
The "economy of enough" opposes the economy of unlimited property accumulation through money mechanisms linked to the idol Mammonism.

Linked to the financial crisis is another systemic crisis, the deep ecological crisis. The resources of the earth are limited.

An economic model built on endless growth needs endless resources.

Working for a paradigm shift would also be peace work.

Ulrich Duchrow, born 1935, is a professor of systematic theology at the University of Heidelberg specializing in ecumenical theology and theology-economy issues.
