Kucinich Announces New Effort

Grassroots Leaders, 2 Million Supporters, Rally Behind Impeachment

WHEN:  Wednesday September 10, 2008 1:00 -1:30 P.M

WHERE: Room 2456 of the Rayburn House Office Building

Un-embargoed comments:

"Before the Congress adjourns, I will bring forth a new proposal for the establishment of a National Commission on Truth and Reconciliation, which will have the power to compel testimony and gather official documents to reveal to the American people not only the underlying deception which has divided us, but in that process of truth-seeking set our nation on a path of reconciliation.

"Standing with me here today are representatives of organizations who have been part of a national grassroots impeachment movement which has collected over a million signatures.  Nationally over two million people have signed impeachment petitions.  I want to thank the leaders for their efforts and work with them to continue to build a movement for truth.

"9/11 is the day the world changed.  We want today, September 10, 2008 to be a new beginning in our efforts to change the world.  For my part, I am going to ask those grassroots leaders who have channeled their energies into defending the Constitution and the rule of law to join me in this new endeavor.

"Even in the face of an indifferent Congress, a powerful grassroots movement has emerged to gather over a million signatures on impeachment petitions because America has been led into a dark and destructive period of deceit for which there is only one Constitutional remedy - - Impeachment,"  Kucinich said.

"Impeachment has been the first step in our efforts toward truth.  The American people were lied to.  We went to war based on lies.  Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

"This election should and must be about the economy:  Millions of Americans have lost their homes, their investments, their health care, their retirement security and the education of their children is at risk.  But long after this election is over, the very structure of our democracy will need repair.

"America must move from the errant retributive justice of 9/11 to a healing restorative process of truth and reconciliation.   The truth can move us forward, as a unified whole, so that we can one day become a re-United States.

"In the face of a destructive war against Iraq, preparations for war against Iran, the initiation of a cold war with Russia, the inevitable destruction of our domestic economy from the extraordinary cost of a great military buildup, and the gutting of civil liberties, the call for Impeachment has been the only remedy.  Millions of America recognize this.
