Since the Feb. 1 elimination of public affairs reporter Marc Steiner from WYPR public radio, WYPR listeners and members have been protesting outside WYPR offices in Baltimore. Protests at WYPR are heading into its second month.

This issue goes beyond the person of Marc Steiner, as Steiner himself has noted. The firing goes to the heart of who runs public radio. Must WYPR and other public radio stations be responsive to their listener communities?

The reform WYPR movement in Maryland has launched a blog to provide daily coverage of this affair at savewypr.wordpress.com. It is edited by myself, and soon will feature more and more guest bloggers who will speak to this firing, reforming WYPR, and public radio issues in general.

The March 3, 2008 post is the blog's second ever. The blog will be posting every day Monday through Friday.

Since early February active WYPR members and listeners have created Web sites to reverse this decision at sossteiner.com and savesteinershow.com. Over 700 people have signed an online petition to bring The Marc Steiner Show back to WYPR.

WYPR has moved back its board of directors meeting back from March 12 to April 15 as a result of the public pressure.

For daily coverage, visit the blog at savewypr.wordpress.com.
