Alfred Hitchcock - Saboteur (1942):

'Saboteur' is a largely absurd ride as Hitchcock mines material he has already made familiar before. We see an innocent man accused of a crime, forced to pursue the real culprit, handcuffed and encountering a disbelieving, attractive blonde and forcing her to accompany him.

The scenes flow from one to another rather ridiculously; but it is fun to take in.

Eventually, the chase turns to New York and what do fleeing saboteurs do when in NY? Visit the Statue of Liberty, of course.

this is a delicious film from today's perspective. The scenes with Mr. Tobin (Otto Kruger), are particularly rich. He plays the familiar Hitch role of respected and admired citizen who has dark secrets.

Watching Tobin explain to Barry Kane (Robert Cummings) the motivation behind selling out a country in order to live a rich life could be used as a training film for young recruits who are joining today's Shadow Government.

Tobin is respected and charming, parasitic, Fascist and dangerous. There are a lot of Tobins about today. Indeed, the seemingly gentile, respectable man who profits from the destruction of the community at large could even be your next door neighbor!
