The Cuban Five are Antonio Guerrero, René González, Fernando González, Ramón Labañino & Gerardo Hernández. The five were convicted in 2001 for trying to stop terrorist attacks against Cuba, conducted by anti-Cuba groups based in Miami. In the last 40 years more than 3,000 Cubans have died as a result of these terrorists’ attacks. In early 2005 the UN Commission on Human Rights ruled that the detention of the five political prisoners in the U.S. violates the International Convention on Civilian and Political Rights.
Despite growing support in the U.S. and around the world, the five remain imprisoned with long sentences in far-flung U.S. maximum security penitentiaries. The Cuban people have the right to self-determination and sovereignty. The Cuban Five—at great personal risk—were trying to protect the lives of Cubans and other people. We call for a new trial and freedom for the heroic Cuban 5!
