'Lust, Caution' is a suspenseful espionage thriller and porn film that makes an undeniable Fascist statement. It is very capably directed by Ang Lee, one of the best directors in the world. I've always admired Lee's skill. It is a pity, indeed, that he's using his talents to help bring about a closed, dark world.

Whether Tony Yeung's love train ever enters Wei Tang's tunnel during their sex scenes is not entirely clear. It seems to me that they were really doing it, but i can't recall seeing his energized Choo Choo.

It doesn't matter. The sex scenes are graphic to the point where there's nothing left to the imagination. I'm rather of two minds about this much erotica in a WWII spy thriller. I watch. However, i also don't wish to see cinematic actresses lose their virtue so publicly.

(btw, in "Casablanca", Humphrey Bogart opens up a bottle of champagne and Ingrid Bergman shares it with him. that's as frank as movie makers were about sex during the 1940s era that 'Lust, Caution' is set in.)

'Lust Caution' has a very strong cast. It works as a thriller. Lee's on the mark visually. However, the Fascist denouement and the overly pornographic sex scenes will likely make you walk away with troubling feelings. I think they're trying to tell us that resistance is futile.

The 'Amphibian Man' is a strange but compelling science fiction love story with a very humanistic political outlook. Visually, it is striking. The cast is very good. The Czech classic "Lemonade Joe", which comes two years afterwards, seems to have borrowed many elements from it.

In both films, Eastern European/Russian audiences view superheroes being crushed by the State and/or the prevailing economic system. Couched behind the science fiction and Western genres, both films garner support for unusual individuals.
