Goya's Ghosts tells a bleak story in a rather happy way. while difficult to pin down as a Matrix entry, Milos Forman either applied brakes to the storytelling or he doesn't know what he's doing.

Still, the three principals are excellent. Natalie Portman is the best in the cast; she plays both the doomed Ines and sultry Alicia. Stellan Skarsgard's Goya is much more charming than passionate; but he holds our attention. Same with Javier Bardem as Brother Lorenzo, a character who would be employed with Indymedia today.

the history behind this era is amazingly tragic and savage. Americans know little about the historical events surrounding the Peninsular wars. i trust the film is at least partly factual about the last days of the Spanish Inquisition in the late 18th century.

I'd be surprised if Ms. Portman doesn't receive a lot of awards for her good work here. Ines loses everything to the malicious Spanish Church. Watching the Spanish clergy destroying lives for the sake of doing it is very similiar to watching today's Matrix doing much the same. Who are these people who throughout history do little more than destroy civilizations?
