********MISC********
*CINEMA: CRISS CROSS*
Criss Cross (1949):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041268/
Criss Cross should be named "Ain't Dames Tough!" Here pathetic Steve (Burt Lancaster) can't get his duplicious former wife (Yvonne De Carlo) off his mind, no matter how she toys with him. Steve even travelled around the world and returned to his home in order to forget her—it didn't work.
Steve is obviously unstable. meanwhile, he also happens to be an armored car driver. didn't the armored car companies in the 1940s screen unstable characters like Steve from joining their brigades?
Despite the humor in the plot, Criss Cross is a very interesting noir. it should not be missed by noir buffs.
Lancaster, De Carlo and the slimiest screen dirtball ever, Dan Duryea, are all great. Siodmak's direction is not visually remarkable but seems fluid, moving the film along. the final scenes are very memorable.)
you don't often see strong but pathetic characters like Lancaster's Steve Thompson anymore. Also, Duryea is a classic, imitable bad guy. i also think De Carlo's Anna Dundee is an excellent followup to Jane Greer's Kathie Moffat (in the 1947, 'Out of the Past'). De Carlo certainly looks fab here.
The depth of characterization in Criss Cross is much different than with today's CIA's cinema; no American film out today is worth seeing twice.
