(Kiss of Death is one of the best noirs in the canon. It succeeds on many levels. Richard Widmark's Tommy Udo is a much-imitated, ground-breaking moment for cinematic villains. Udo is pitiful and terrifying. We view one of the most disturbing murders ever put in the movies. however, by a fascinating plot switch, Udo is to some extent, admirable. While Victor Mature's Nick Bianco double-crosses and snitches, Udo doesn't.

Kiss has outstanding performances all around. The story is just classic; there's little that could have been improved.

it is very interesting how socially progressive it is. I never realized it; but Kiss of Death gives an economic reason for parolled Bianco's return to crime, the narrator affirms support for a criminal as the film begins, we later see the narrator as an ideal young woman. Kiss of Death was made by people who worked for social and economic justice by slipping those values in the story.)



La Vie en Rose (2007):

there's enough battering in "La Vie en Rose" to think this is yet another example of CIA-movie making. early on you're made to feel very disturbed as the great Edith Piaf collapses while performing, or endures brushes with madness in her squalid days in the brothel.

however, there are real scene jems here. Marion Cotillard's Piaf is very memorable. you're exposed to Edit Piaf's genius; you see what it is like to live a dimunitive, firefly's life of many peaks and valleys.

this film offers us some genuinely memorable artistic moments with Piaf/Cotillard. i love all the scenes of young Piaf the unknown singer.

Edith is depicted as someone who commands the deepest recesses of her mind to give her the stability she needs to sing with artistic purity. there is a cost associated with using those mental reserves and she pays it.
