(Once upon a time filmmakers weren't sponsored by the CIA, and didn't make films with constant jerky, hand-held camera motion, a technique that seems employed to dull the movie-going experience.

However, of all the films that I've seen that have employed this choppy technique, "Once" is one of the best. I particularly believe the ending is memorable, and worth waiting for.

there's an interesting love story here. it would have been better had they both been a wee better at performing (particularly Irglova); however, the days of Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney putting on a show in the barn are long over.

the two principal lower-middle characters defy the prisons that enslave us today; they manage to find lots of free time to explore love and music, dress in the current sytle and are largely unburdened by financial pressures or long work weeks. (He shows up in a spiffy motorcycle late in the show—not bad for a vacuum repairman who sings on the street at night.)

'Once' delivers some emotional satisfaction but it is imprisoned—by design—from the choppy feel. I wonder if the public will ever be permitted to view pure cinema again.)
