Baby Doll (1956):

Film fans should not miss 'Baby Doll', directed by the great director (and unfortunately, verifiable snitch) Elia Kazan. This is truly a great film. I feel enriched; this film is a delight.

from Tennesee Williams's play, Baby Doll is a sinful combination of love story, eroticism, anti-bigotry and anti-capitalist social commentary. (the socio-economic politics might have had more to do with this film being suppressed than the the sexual ones.)

Tennessee Williams' story is rich with human insight. in addition, Kazan's direction is superb. Karl Maldon, Carroll Baker and Eli Wallach are all excellent. It is delicious fun watching two grown men compete with one another to be the first to seduce a comely 19-year old virgin (Baker).

Williams/Kazan handle bigotry in two ways. they both employ stereotypical Black characters that do little more than laugh at poor Archie Lee (Malden). however, there are clear anti-bigotry sentiments from Williams later on. Archie Lee trys to recover from his fatal blow and recover his stature by turning to the local good old boy network of white bigots. the bigotry is thus institutionalized.

Above all, Baby Doll manages to be both erotic and a nice love story; it is rare to see a film that has both qualities.
