*CINEMA*
Through a Glass Darkly:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055499/
http://www.dvdmoviecentral.com/ReviewsText/through_a_glass_darkly.htm
(Bergman's 1961, BW classic depicting a young woman deteriorating into madness while her family watches in horror, unable to help.
Harriet Andersson really throws herself into the role of poor Karin. I really like roles and acting like this; however many young people today, having been indocrinated for decades to reject melodrama, will regard her performance and this movie as self-parody.
however, i say Bergman's genius lies in his details. 'A Glass Darkly' features Karin. however, as important are the three men reacting to her destruction. The men all seem to represent various components of Bergman's personality. Gunnar Bjorkstrand (once again) as the successful, distant writer is an obvious fill-in for Bergman. however, so too is the adolescent who (it appears) makes a sexual discovery. The young man finds out what all the fun of being an adult male is all about.
pity that films like this can no longer be made. film buffs will love 'Through a Glass Darkly'.)
peace,
NJS
