(first couple of times I saw 'Seventh Seal', which is shot very harshly in black and white, I fell asleep. however, with this latest viewing i'm astonished at how good it is.

this is a starkly realized, multi-themed meditation. Death, and the absence of God in the world are obvious themes. Another is the cruelties that scared humans inflict senselessly upon on each other.

Bergman's cast here is first rate. Gunnar Bjornstrand as the clever, noble and misogynist Squire steals the show. however, Max von Sydow, Nils Poppe and one of this blogger's favorite European actresses, Bibi Andersson, all play memorable characters from the mid-14th-century.

Nils Poppe's Jof is an obvious stand-in for Bergman himself. Jof is the director of the modestly talented theatrical troup. He routinely has visions that no one else shares. the troup's performance, a highlight of the story, is not received well. Jof is even later humiliated by his audience in the local tavern.

Jof's reality depicts the senselessness of an artist's life. ("Stardust Memories", another Bergman classic, follows a similiar humiliation theme.)

wouldn't it be really cool to be paid by the US government to prevent independent or spontaneous artistic expressions like the 'Seventh Seal' from emerging! wow, i could take a joke "week week" and some great urban property as payment for shutting the public down intellectually. That sounds so cool!)
