Massive Antiwar Protest Underscores Movement's New Power

In what may be the largest antiwar protest in Washington, D.C. since the March 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, organizers say up to half a million protesters came to the capital on Jan. 27 to demonstrate their opposition to President Bush's escalation of the Iraq war and to call for an end to the U.S. occupation. A rally on the mall was followed by a spirited march, which almost completely encircled the capital building. Some 800 activists stayed on in Washington after the protest to lobby their congressional representatives on Jan. 29. After Democrats won a landslide victory in the mid-term election, based largely on the public's majority anti-war sentiment, the peace movement seemed to be infused with a new sense of its power to change U.S. policy.
