*ROGER, RIP*

…more thoughts on my lost pal. this devilish comedian was about 16. he was given to me (circa 1996) by an art institute teacher experiencing tough times; they were both living in a station wagon. initially, Roger was always energetic as Hell. once a stray, he was very wild. it was a real struggle not giving him away in the first week because he was very difficult to control.

our connection grew with a very sharp vertical curve. some cats have the ability to learn so many little tricks to amuse themselves that your bond with them can be beyond what you ever experience with a human.

flash forward to the present and Roger has been noticeably slowing down. i buy him a thermal mat to sit on. because it looks to much like a cat toy he avoids it for about six weeks. Finally, he tries it and suddenly that's his #1 spot to sit. meanwhile, he is sitting quite a bit. his movement is lethargic. i have been telling myself to get prepared.

new year's 2007 he has a stroke. He cries out in pain. i walk over. he moves away, not wanting me to help him. He is putting on an act; i.e., pretending not to be ill. about ten minutes later he even jumps on top of the couch. however, he can't manage the deception much further.


hours later the horrible moment arrives when i am looking at my best friend in the animal hospital for the last time. having been treated oxygen, he's in a happpy mood, laying on his back. i touch his paw and he touches back. my eyes are very tearful while his are reassuring. I have to decide when to turn away from him. what a particulaly unique and terrible burden that is.

Hercules had it easy; his first labor should have been to perform a mercy killing for a loved one.
walking away from Roger is by far the hardest thing i've ever done.

i'm ok. another cat is on the horizon. i haven't totally lost my mind over Roger. Life goes on. a great thanks to all my friends who offered their support.

still, i miss Roger more than mere words can convey…
