********EULOGY for a DEAR FRIEND******** i want to write a book about Roger, my late, unusually great feline who passed away on new year's day, 2007. he invented a little game that i thought was extremely clever. He would find objects of mine and (when I wasn't around he'd) place them near his food bowl. that was my clue to hide what he had put there. If i hid the object well sometimes weeks, even months would pass before he returned it to the food bowl. Those moments were indescribably joyous to me. How did Roger remember what he was searching for over a month? How did Roger get it in his head for us to play this game? The first time Roger put something near his food bowl he meowed impatiently until I understood that he wanted me to hide it (versus throwing it). He taught me this game. i've published countless blogs with Roger sitting at my feet or by my side. he loved physical play. so, i could never quite post to Baltimore IMC just yet because Roger has launched his latest attack. Or, i can't post to L.A. IMC just now because of Roger's newest perfidy. from these amusing provocations we'd engage in serious cat pro-wrestling; i.e., the two of us pretending that we were fighting to the death. i am the foil in this equation. so, while it serves me no benefit i'm tickling his tummy and exposing my hands for his bites, scratches and fearsome leg pumps, his eyes lighting up with glee. (Gloves were definitely required.) Roger never got tired of this game and assuming one of us wasn't sick he would not allow a day to go by without us playing it at least twice. We played this cat-fight game daily for over ten years. he bit the landlord several times for entering the apartment without me present. He was a superb guard cat. he was always around when i needed him—often. we're nothing but dust. this news blog is dedicated to Roger, the truest friend i've ever had. unfortunately, i've no pics to share. (i tried several times to photograph him but he wouldn't cooperate.) RIP, Roger (1991?-2007).
