—the Double Life of Veronique is another interesting meditation from the late, great polish directory Krzysztof Kieslowski. I've always admired Kieslowski's skill with color. he's exquisitely capable of using color to convey eroticism and repression all at once. Meanwhile, who is hotter than a young Irene Jacob? (no one!) Recommended.



2. Akeelah and the Bee (2006):

—Akeelah serves as propaganda for the Matrix. it also is entertaining.

it depicts an America that has been stolen from us. For example, as Akeelah rises in the spelling bee championship we see large numbers of people gathered in front of a TV set to watch. however, there are no communities of people anymore. no one has the free time to leave work to spend daylight hours watching a young girl spell words. Then there's the brief shots of the White House late in the movie. There is no democracy anymore; while the film's brief segment conveys that there is.

if you can stomach the political manipulation Akeelah is enjoyable.
(btw, 'pulchritude' as the last word in a spelling bee is ludicrous. it's way too easy!)



3. Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967):

—even though i'm a big fan of Brando, Taylor, Huston and Harris i couldn't get interested in Reflections enough to finish it. i gave up with the horse-whipping scene.

the early sequences move terribly slowly. also, the subject matter of a repressed homosexual in a military environment is quite familiar by now. unfortunately, this film is dated.
