(there is so much to say about 'Divorce, Italian Style'. first of all, it features the great Marcello Mastrioianni, Daniela Rocca and one of NJS's favorites, Stefania Sandrelli. All three are superb. (Sandrelli is immortalized in 'Au Hazard Balthasar', arguably the greatest of movie of all time.)

Germi's visual style is noteworthy. the writing sparkles; it is as tight in that department as the films of Michael Curtiz.

However, unlike Curtiz's "Hollywood stle", Germi applys an Italian neorealist's mise en scene to his scenes. The result is a very carnal and wicked experience, beautifully executed.

'Divorce, Italian-style' should be required viewing for film buffs. In addition, on their DVD Criterian throws in two excellent documentaries on Germmi. Last, there are early screen tests of Stefania Sandrelli and Daniela Roca! this is truly of interest only to film buffs. however, it is magical to see Sandrelli when she was first starting out, before she teamed up with Robert Bresson for a film (i.e., Balthazar) that has FEW rivals for the ultimate cinematic achievement.)
