Baltimore City based steel pan orchestra performs for International group of dignitaries and officials at the Caribbean Night Party at the UK Embassy.
September 15, 2006 Baltimore, MD -- Baltimore Education and Cultural Institute Inc. (BECI), sponsor of the Harbor Knights Youth Steel Orchestra, recently accepted an invitation for the children's orchestra to perform in Washington, DC. The invitation was to play at a party, but not just anyone would be in attendance, because the party was at the UK Embassy. The Caribbean Night Party was a gathering of approximately 100 representatives from the following countries: Antigua & Barbuda, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Finland, Gabon, Germany, Luxembourg, Malawi, Malta, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States. The party was a great success with great food, beverages and the lively entertainment provided exclusively by the Harbor Knights Youth Steel Orchestra resulted in lots of dancing to the melodic tunes emerging from their steel pan drums.
The Harbor Knights Youth Steel Orchestra is a steel pan performing group of children from Baltimore City. The children ages 9 to 18 are from different communities throughout the City, including Cherry Hill were their sponsor BECI Inc. is headquartered. The inaugural performance for the group in April 2006 was at the St. Veronica Catholic Church in Cherry Hill and since then, the group has performed at over 20 engagements in and around the Baltimore-Washington region and as far away as Philadelphia, PA. The orchestra is an outgrowth of the successful BECI Inc. Pan Youth Program which is an after school and summer music enrichment program that teaches children to play the steel pan drums. Fifteen graduates of the Pan Youth Program under the direction of Mr. Dionne Kerr formed the orchestra as a way to promote and expand outreach for all of the ongoing BECI Inc. community based cultural and arts programs.
