Documentary screening: Soma An Anarchist Therapy

With difficulty walking, and half-blinded from torture by the Brazilian military dictatorship, 79 year-old Roberto Freire continues to develop somatherapy, completing his life's work. Incorporating the ideas of Wilhelm Reich, the politics of anarchism, and the culture of capoeira angola, Soma is used by therapists organized in anarchist collectives to fight the psychological effects of authoritarianism. Nick Cooper travelled to Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Bahia, and São Paulo to find the exercises, principles, voices, and movement of somatherapy.

CENTERSTAGE Pearlstone Theater
CENTERSTAGE is conveniently located at 700 N. Calvert Street in downtown Baltimore, just 10 blocks north of the Inner Harbor in the heart of the Mount Vernon Cultural District.
Directions
FROM THE NORTH via The Jones Falls Expressway
("The JFX," "83," aka Exit 24 South off 695)

Take the expressway south to Guilford Avenue exit (on the right immediately after St. Paul Street). Once on Guilford, stay in the right lane as you cross Madison Street, then make the next right turn onto Monument Street, just before the Downtown Athletic Club. Go one block to the intersection of Monument and Calvert Streets: a right turn will put you in front of the theater, or you could turn left into the entrance of the Chesapeake Center Garage if you would prefer to park there.
FROM THE NORTHEAST via I-95

Take I-95 south, past the Baltimore Beltway (695), all the way through the Fort McHenry Tunnel. After the tunnel, as you approach the city, get off at I-395 exit toward Baltimore and the Inner Harbor. Stay to the left as the road splits (toward Conway Street, not MLK Boulevard), then move to the right as you exit the freeway. Turn right at the second light (Pratt Street) and get into the left lane. It becomes a "left-turn-only" lane at Calvert Street; turn left. We are about ten blocks up on the left side.
FROM THE EAST via Route 40

From Aberdeen, Rosedale, and other points east, take Route 40 (Pulaski Highway) toward Baltimore. As you approach downtown, it becomes Orleans Street. Follow Orleans into the city and over the bridge as you come into the downtown area. The second traffic light past the bridge is Charles Street; turn right onto Charles. The next light is Centre Street; make another right turn onto Centre Street. The second traffic signal is Calvert Street; turn left onto Calvert. We are in the second block, on the left side of the street.
FROM THE SOUTH via I-295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway)

Take 295 north toward Baltimore. (You will pass both I-695 and the Harbor Tunnel Throughway before entering downtown Baltimore.) The parkway ends as it enters the city, becoming Russell Street. Stay on Russell Street, getting into the right hand lane as you pass Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Make a right turn onto Pratt Street (just past the stadium), then move to the left lane. It becomes a "left-turn-only" lane at Calvert Street; turn left. We are about ten blocks up on the left side.
