Student Activists organize to stem the further erosion of civil liberties post-September 11
Protest/rally against Operation TIPS (Terrorist Information and Prevention System) program scheduled to go into effect in August. Operation TIPS is "a national system for reporting suspicious, and potentially terrorist-related activity. The program will involve the millions of American workers who, in the daily course of their work, are in a unique position to see potentially unusual or suspicious activity in public places." (
www.citizencorps.gov/tips.html) Student organizers and other activists will rally to express their opposition to this further erosion of our rights. The rally/protest will take place on Monday, July 29, 2002, at 1 P.M in front of the Department of Justice building.
At this pivotal moment in American history, after the biggest terrorist attack on American soil, it is important to stress the need for national security while at the same time upholding the democratic principles upon which this great nation was founded and for which the victims of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania died and for which our brave men and women in the armed forces are currently fighting for. September 11 was more the result of misguided foreign policy and faulty intelligence than about civil liberties. Most experts agree that none of the current measures would have prevented Sept. 11, and if that isn't enough we are comforted by the words of one of our Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin, "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
