All eyes are on defending champion Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Federer is trying to hold all grand slams (i.e., a non-calendar year grand slam). He's also trying to win a calendar grand slam this year. Doing either is a stupendous achievement. He can't claim to have been the world's all-time greatest tennis player without such a unique accomplishment.


Standing in his way is Rafa. The slow clay at Roland Garros favors Rafa. So does age. (Rafa is 19, Fed is 24.) The French Open is a grueling, seven five-set match tournament. Being younger than your opponent gives you a better recovery, assuming both of you are exhausted.

Fed's draw is much tougher than Rafa's. If Fed makes the final he may be totally drained.

Many tennis fans prefer grass to clay. So does Federer. He's a grass court wizard who is being asked to win on a surface that constantly rewards a clay-court specialist like Nadal. Go Fed!
