Stop the BGE Rate Hike
Roll Back Rates – No Merger!
Gas & Electric for the People, Not for Profit
Let the People Take Over the Utilities
Let’s take it to the big bosses - Picket Mayo Shattuck III, a banker and the CEO of Constellation Energy/ BGE, who represents the big-money interests that are pushing for a huge merger - and who is about to profit from a 72% increase in your gas and electric bills – he lives in a mansion in Baltimore. His electric will not get shut-off!
Protest and March
Wednesday, March 29, 2006
Gather at N. Charles & Coldspring Ave. at 5:30 PM
At 6 P.M. we will march to Mayo Shattuck’s house at 20 Blythewood Rd
(at the corner near Loyola College, Bus lines #11, 33)
They want to raise gas and electric bills by 72%- even though it's official that we have overpaid BGE $528 Million in extra charges (see the $4.60 each month in "stranded costs" even though there are no "stranded costs"). On top of that they want to merge Constellation Energy/ BGE with a Florida company in the nation's biggest utility merger in history. The biggest banks that control both companies will win and we'll lose.
In just the last three months of 2005, Constellation/ BGE profits went up 45% ($195 Million in 3 months). A year before that, their profits increased 83% while several people died in fires when they couldn't pay the increased bills and had to heat by other means. Mayo Shattuck will personally get over $40 million more as a result of the merger including his 7 million salary (2004) along with $22 million in unexercised stocks from previous years. The top four Constellation Energy Execs will get a $78 million compensation package as a result of the merger. We will pay for this. For those trying to survive on retirement or disability checks, or who are struggling as they try to make decisions between paying for health care or mortgage payments or education of our children, this is will mean disaster!
Some of the political figures are wringing their hands and trying to figure out how to make us swallow this pill by sugar coating it. Spreading the cost over time and providing more tax money for grants are two things being proposed. The problem is that these billion dollar corporate entities should not get one more penny and we should not be forced to go through humiliating applications and ridiculous qualifications to get grants that ultimately enrich BGE.
Constellation/ BGE and Mayo Shattuck have made major contributions to both the Democrats and Republicans- to Bush, Erhlich and O'Malley and many of the legislators of both parties who passed the deregulation bill in 1999. The head of the Public Service Commission "regulating" BGE is an industry guy. Half of the top officials appointed by the governor in the Md. Dept of Environment have worked for Constellation.
The solution is simple. STOP THE RATE HIKE—RETURN THE $528 MILLION IN STOLEN MONEY. NO MERGER. The people who have invested so much money into the company by paying their bills, should take over this company and have it serve the people's needs for heat and light and not for profit.
