Thousands of workers won't be able to get to their jobs. Seniors and the
disabled will be shut in. Students will have to wake up at 4 A.M. just to
be able to get to their classes. This is because bus lines will be cut
and others moved miles from their original site.
Why? Because the Governor has cut 5 million dollars from the bus budget
and shifted it into building highways. This was a decision of priorities
not one of necessity. They cannot use the old excuse of inadequate fare
box returns. The money is there.
It's obscene that trillions are being spent on the war on Iraq-while the
poor and the workers in this city are going to be deprived of
transportation.
It's an insult that money will go to rich highway contractors while
Baltimore schools are without books, teachers or even toilet paper. And
after workers lose their jobs--their solution will be Central Booking and
City Jail.
We call for an INJUNCTION to stop this plan so that the community and the
workers have the time to prepare to do whatever is necessary to stop it.
The bus driver's union has stated that they feel it is discriminatory. We
agree. A majority African American city has been disproportionately
targeted. The new bus plans segregates Baltimore and fences the community
in.
Whether you take the bus or drive--our community does not need more
joblessness and less service. We will organize protests, picket lines and
actions to SHUT IT DOWN! The MTA has picketed October 16, 2005, as the
day to enact the cuts--the anniversary date of the Million Man March and
last year's Million Worker March. We call on all community, religious,
union and student groups to come together to say NO!
Join the campaign/call or stop by the office/Thursday's between 7 P.M. and
