In 1862, in present-day Minnesota, a large portion of the Sioux Indians began attacking White settlers in the territory. These attacks were carried out as a reaction to repeated broken promises by the White settlers and the U.S. government. Known as the Sioux Uprising, it took the Whites by surprise, and resulted in more than eight hundred deaths. After it was suppressed a military court sentenced 303 Sioux to death, but President Abraham Lincoln intervened and reduced the list. Eventually 38 Sioux were executed.
