MARYLAND PRISON SYSTEM: What you NEED to know

Hosted by Anthony McCarthy, from The News Round-up with Anthony McCarthy, WYPR.

Maryland's prison system has been plagued by overcrowding, inadequate rehabilitative services, and staff shortages. If left unabated, this situation will continue to put the lives of detained individuals, inmates and prison staff at risk. This evening's discussion will focus on reforms needed in the prison system. Also, how do we, as a community, reduce the need for incarceration?

Issues to be discussed:

Safety and staffing shortages in the prisons

Treatment of inmates and their families

What causes the overcrowding?

Rehabilitation vs. Recidivism

Community responses to at-risk youth

Panelists include:

Odell Smoot, former inmate and brother of Raymond Smoot.

Officer Dex Williams, 18 year veteran correctional officer, MRDCC.

Sgt. Ronald Joyner, 13 year veteran correctional officer and in-service training instructor, MRDCC.

Jacqueline Robarge, director of Power Inside, a grassroots inmate advocacy organization.

Ray Cook, juvenile justice advocate, founder of On Our Shoulders.

Dante Wilson, youth and family counselor, founder of Reclaiming Our Children.
