In 1687, Englishman Isaac Newton published "Principia." The full title was "Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy." In this book, complete with mathematical evidence, Newton set forth his law of gravitation. It was a sensational and convincing explanation of not only how apples fall to the ground, but also how the Earth and the other planets are held in their orbits around the sun. To the scientific community at the time, Newton's discovery confirmed the Copernican system of astronomy, that the Earth rotated around the Sun.
