Mexico and Belize Ink Cooperation Agreements
Bellmopan, Jun 29 (Prensa Latina) Mexico and Belize have signed three cooperation agreements, primarily designed to foster bilateral relations and development in the small Central American country.
The accords promise to maintain strong diplomatic ties between both countries through technical and scientific cooperation in times of national disaster, improved security at the Belize-Mexico border, the Caribbean Media Corporation reported Wednesday.
They also allow for the construction of two new bridges estimated at US$30 million in the Corozal district including one within Belize linking the Sarteneja area and Corozal Town, a route now serviced by a hand-cranked ferry.
The agreements were signed by Belize´s Primer Minister Said Musa and Mexico´s President Vicente Fox, who made a whirlwind visit to Belmopan on his way to Honduras to attend the Central American Summit.
In speaking to a joint sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate on Tuesday night, Fox said there was no doubt Belize can play a strategic role connecting Mexico with Central America.
The Mexican oil giant PEMEX also announced plans to open a gas station in Belize, and Musa was upbeat on the prospects for competition in the fuel sector, CMC indicated.
