June 16, 2005 on this day:

In 1884 the first roller coaster in the United States began operation. It was located at Coney Island, New York, and was called the "Gravity Switchback Pleasure Railway." Riders would ride a train from the top of a forty-five foot tower down a steel track which ended at the base of an identical tower. They would then climb stairs and take a similar return trip. The trains were manually pulled back after each ride. The trains traveled at six miles per hour. The coaster was so popular that, at five cents per ride, it paid for itself in less than three weeks.
