House Bill: Repeal the 22nd Amendment

Something escaping the notice of most in the mainstream media but recently pointed to by the New Hampshire Indymedia Center and many other places is the fact that a House Resolution was introduced to the House floor February 17, 2005 by HOYER and co-sponsored by BERMAN, SENSENBRENNER, SABO, PALLONE, that would repeal the 22nd amendment of the US Constitution.
The 22nd amendement of the US Constitution was ratified in 1951 after FDR had been elected to four terms as president The first part of the text of the amendment is as follows, which is the most germaine to the efforts of Hoyer, et al.,

Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

Though the bill was introduced this past February, it escaped notice, possibly mostly because -- on its face -- it seems like such a ludicrous attempt by hacks to keep Bush in office, no one would likely believe it would have any legs. Nonsense resolutions are brought to the floor all the time that never see the light of day.

It can easily be expected that this resolution (H. J. RES. 24) will languish until after 2006 elections. Should the GOP pick up enough seats for a super majority, this might become more noticeable, despite its apparent nature. And don't let the fact that Hoyer, Sabo, Pallone and Berman are Democrats. Many in Congress are career politicians first and simply don't like term limits of any kind. The timing of this particular effort though is rather peculiar.

The resolution doesn't say much:

The twenty-second article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is repealed.
