Grandson of London Fog Founder Brings Honey Wine To Maryland!
“Mead is a Fantastic Alternative to Beer or Wine,” says Maryland Distributor
FT. WASHINGTON, MARYLAND - The word “honeymoon” stems from honey wine and the tradition of drinking it for one full lunar cycle starting on the first night of a couple’s wedding. DOPS Distribution is now selling honey wine (mead) produced by Boulder, Colorado’s Redstone Meadery.
“Mead can be dry or sweet, still or sparkling and have fruit, herbs or spices added,” says David Myers, Redstone Meadery Chairman of the Mead. To kick off distribution in Maryland, Mr. Myers will be in Baltimore to speak at the June 16-18 National Homebrewers Conference (
www.beertown.org). At the conference he will conduct tastings and deliver a talk on the commercial mead revolution. Mr. Myers is also a Baltimore native and grandson of hometown businessman Israel Myers, founder of London Fog.
“Mead is historically referred to as nectar of the gods. It can stand alone or, just like grape wine and beer, complement food at the dinner table. It can also be mixed into cocktails,” states Myers. According to Mr. Myers, honey is one of the most delicate and expensive fermentables on the market. “Like I always say…good enough for Zeus, good enough for you!”
Distribution into Maryland will make Redstone products available in over a dozen states nationally. Black Raspberry Nectar, Sunshine Nectar, Traditional Mountain Honey Wine, Juniper Berry Mountain Honey Wine and Vanilla Bean Cinnamon Stick Mountain Honey Wine are the flavors distributed.
All Redstone mead is packaged in cobalt blue swing-top bottles. “The swing top allows our mead to last much longer than corked wine because they hold their freshness longer,” states Myers.
The drink, arguably the world’s first fermented beverage, has been made for centuries and is popular in countries including the United Kingdom, Ethiopia, Poland, Ireland and now the United States. In the U.S. news on mead includes an announcement from the National Honey Board that it may contribute to similar health benefits as white wine due to honey's antioxidant characteristics. As well a new Association to promote mead has been created. For information on The International Mead Association go to
