In 1787 the U.S. Constitutional Convention first convened with George Washington presiding. The founding fathers worked for well over a year drafting the Constitution, which was not ratified until 1789. Much of what was discussed during the convention is unknown, as no official minutes were taken. The framers kept the proceedings secret so as to prevent outside influence in the creation of the document, and to help ensure that future generations interpreted the provisions of the Constitution as they saw fit.
