In 1856, the Pottawatomie Creek Massacre occurred in Kansas. By 1856 Kansas had two governments at odds over the issue of slavery. Pro-slavery immigrants from Missouri controlled the territorial legislature while the antislavery element had established a rival government at Topeka. In May, 1856 a pro-slavery posse raided the antislavery town of Lawrence, burning several buildings. Although there was no bloodshed, the citizens were terrorized. In retaliation, John Brown led an attack on pro-slavery settlers on Pottawatomie Creek, killing five. Brown was a radical abolitionist who would later launch an attack on the U.S. arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia.
