In 1607 just over one hundred English settlers founded the town of Jamestown, Virginia. This was the first permanent English settlement in the New World. The settlers were ill-prepared to survive and lack of food as well as fighting with local Indians decimated their numbers. Jamestown struggled for several years but eventually prospered when the settlers began to cultivate tobacco.
