In 1970, after several days of protest, the National Guard opened fire on students at Kent State University in Ohio killing four and wounding nine others. The students were protesting U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. The students had earlier taken over several campus buildings, and had burned the campus ROTC headquarters. This tragedy played a major role in turning American public opinion against U.S. involvement in Vietnam.
