April 27, 2005 on this day:

In 1865 America's deadliest maritime accident occurred when the steamship Sultana exploded near Memphis, Tennessee. The Sultana had been built two years earlier and was used primarily to transport Union soldiers during the Civil War. With the war over in April, 1865, Union soldiers throughout the South sought to return home as quickly as possible. The Sultana was built to carry 376 passengers, but on her fateful trip she held more than 2,000. Most of the passengers were Union soldiers that had boarded at Vicksburg, Mississippi. The tremendous weight of the human cargo placed far too much strain on the ship's engines, and the boilers eventually exploded under the pressure. The exact number killed is unknown, but it is estimated to have been between twelve and fifteen hundred.
