"Fierce and uncompromising, his words were as free of soft sentiment as the hard financial and military crises that await him. His message to the hundreds of millions listening on Tuesday were like those of a stern but loving parent to a wayward child.."

Turning," David Korten makes his case for a complete
reconfiguration of Wall Street. "We've had a failed economy.
Environmentally, we are consuming more than the earth can support.
Many economists do not consider the environment but are caught in
growth mythology."

"Certainly, the Bush administration has been horrendous, in terms
of their deregulatory fever, their belief that if we just give
these guys on Wall Street, whose whole life is based on greed, we
take away all regulations so that somehow or another
they’re going to do the right thing and create
prosperity for all Americans. I think you’ve got
to be pretty off the wall to believe that. But I have to say, it
was not just Alan Greenspan and Phil Gramm and George Bush who hold
that view. There were many people in the Clinton administration who
held that view, as well. So I have had some concerns, and
that’s why I voted against Geithner.. What came
out of the House is not only a huge investment in our
infrastructure, a huge investment in energy,
we’re talking about billions of dollars are
going to protect our most vulnerable Americans, significant
increase in food stamps, other programs to help those people who
are falling through the cracks, massive investments in education.
We have the highest rate of childhood poverty in the industrialized
world. Our childcare system is a disaster.

In the "Creole trick," the perpetrator pretends to be the victim.
Cheney sits in a wheelchair and the war profiteering is repressed.
The $3 trillion war (cf. Joseph Stiglitz' book) is a theft of the
present and the future that reduced American stature to a rogue
state. Since the start of the Iraq War, Halliburton and their
former subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root have come under fire for
receiving billions of dollars in no-bid contracts, and then failing
to perform their duties adequately. And now they're facing a major
lawsuit for some of these shoddy services, most notably for
providing tainted supplies of food and water to American troops
serving in Iraq. Robert F. Kennedy Jr talks with Elizabeth Burke,
one of the attorneys handling the newest lawsuit against the two
companies.
