John Pike, a leading defense expert and director of globalsecurity.org, says NorthCom's transition from the mountain is a "little difficult to understand," given that the nation has nuclear missiles ready to launch on "hair-trigger alert."

"Where the hell do they think they'll be getting the alert from?" he says of the transition to the Peterson Building 2 basement.

Pike also is puzzled by the move of Air Force Space Command's space control to Vandenberg, since the military in the past has argued that the expensive upgrades at the mountain required space and missile tracking systems to be "co-located," to avoid confusion that space debris could be incoming munitions, or vice versa.

We were dismayed this afternoon to find our sound cabinet at 2640 (the radical community social/cultural center Red Emma's has been operating for the past six months in conjunction with St. John's Church in Charles Village) broken open, with most of our sound system missing.  About $2000 worth of gear was taken, almost all of which we had bought with money borrowed from our own (meager) personal finances in order to help get the space off the ground.  We used this equipment for most of the events we do at the space, from talks to concerts to film screenings, and until we can replace it, we're pretty much screwed.  We're trying to raise money to replace the stolen equipment - any support you can offer is greatly appreciated, and will help us get community events running smoothly and audibly at 2640 that much more quickly.
