stop the wars
On SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2008--exactly six years after Congress unleashed the dogs of war on Iraq-- we will be sending a message to the war makers in Washington and to the world: We want this war to end and we want it to end now! We are demanding nothing less than the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all occupation forces from Iraq and the closing of all military bases.

Mauritanian coup poses test of international commitment to democratic transformation
The newly installed 11-man military junta has moved quickly to assert its authority in recent days, naming former ambassador to Belgium Moulaye Ould Muhammad Laghdaf as prime minister Thursday in a move clearly designed to curry favor in Brussels and placate international concerns regarding the potential for further instability. "The French have also played a pretty significant role on the security front," Porter said, explaining that Paris admitted that French security advisors were involved with Mauritanian security services after a French voice was audible in amateur video of a firefight with Islamic militants posted on the internet. The junta appears particularly concerned to placate US, EU and French concerns regarding its future actions and will be seeking the gradual reinstitution of bilateral ties and aid ahead of early elections. In doing so, Abdel Aziz has sought to play on the military's role in anti-militant operations, cemented through involvement in the US Trans-Saharan Counterterrorism Initiative (TSCTI, 2005) and earlier Pan-Sahel Initiative. Abdel Aziz has criticized Abdallahi for allowing alleged Islamic militants to be freed via the court system, indicating that junta rule will bring a tougher stance and likely interference in judicial jurisprudence. "The US has been the destination for most Mauritanian oil so far and you also have the French [involved] to a certain extent," Zounmenou said. The seeming decision by major foreign investors and companies, active in the country's few major export industries, to continue with business as usual will serve as a major boost to the junta as it seeks to convince the international community of the viability of its rule. The generals have been seen as pro-business," Porter said. A source tells ISN Security Watch that the junta has moved quickly behind the scenes to reassure business partners and boost foreign investment particularly in the economically crucial extraction industries. Asked if Paris and Washington would be pressuring the military to hand back the reins of power to Abdallahi, Porter said, "No […] The priority for the US and Paris would be on maintaining state stability, pushing the military council towards holding new elections but not undermining the state's overall viability."

DNC Protest, Split, and the Principled Stand of Cynthia McKinney
16 Aug 2008
by
Steven Argue & Cynthia McKinney
"As the United States activated Navy ships and the Air Force to begin an airlift of non-specified goods into the former Soviet state of Georgia, and military exercises began in the Persian Gulf near Iran, I received communications from certain individuals among the Colorado Greens who were organizing campaign support events there, suggesting that I not participate in an anti-war program being organized by other individuals in Colorado." -Cynthia McKinney
In addition, the Green Party of Colorado has issued false statements to the press and all over the internet claiming that Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney will not be participating in the Recreate ’68 events. Here is one such statement from Dave Chandler, co-chair of the Colorado Green Party, Green Party candidate for U.S. Congress in the Seventh Congressional District, and supporter of a Denver ballot measure that would seize the vehicles of illegal immigrants:
“Cynthia McKinney, Green Party candidate for President, and Rosa Clemente, Green Party candidate for Vice President are NOT participating in any Recreate ‘68 activities. Both candidates, and the Green Party of Colorado, are refuting this announcement and are stating that neither candidate, nor the Green Party of Colorado, are in any way associated with Recreate ’68, nor will any of their candidates be speaking at or attending any event, nor are they in any way associated with the group Recreate ’68.”
This is a blatant lie. Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente will be speaking at the Recreate ’68 events.

CRASH THE RNC: Sector 4 Barricade Building Contest
14 Aug 2008
by
UA in the Bay
Representatives of our corrupt two-party system intend to host
self-congratulatory celebrations this summer at the Democratic
National Convention in Denver and the Republican National Convention in St.
Paul. We support demonstrating opposition to their
parties by crashing and shutting them down, while having a little
fun ourselves. In alliance with thousands of others nationwide who
are collaborating to swarm the
RNC on day one, September 1st
— Bay Area, Santa Cruz, and other Northern
California radicals have banded together as "Unconventional Action
(UA) in the Bay" and collectively chosen to adopt SECTOR 4 in
downtown St. Paul. Our commitment to blockades, direct action, and
other roaming protest mischief at the RNC is pledged in full
solidarity with those working to disrupt the DNC in late
August.
