I figure that since none of these issues would be brought to light without this courageous man, I find it very appropriate to approach this subject in a rather angry manner since no one else seems to be.

Breaking Free Of The Protest Mentality

Protestors are in the classic role of "protestors", people with no real power over their lives so they must demand it from the ruling class. Demonstrations also point to a lack of creativity; the only thing we can come up with is playing the song and dance of our rulers. How much longer will these protests go on for? If we could only get a few more tens of thousands to protest, will we be successful in overthrowing capitalism, the state and wage-slavery? Why do the state, capitalism and wage-slavery exist, why do the governments of the U.S. and Israel do what they do, and what are we actually going to do about it?

This article by David Graeber discusses the concept of the gift economy, an idea first explored by Marcel Mauss in his descriptions of the Kwakiutl of British Columbia. He describes how the historical reality of such economies refutes many of the assumptions made by neo-liberal economists about the historical development of economic systems.

Also discussed are contemporary groups (such as the MAUSS group in France) who take their inspiration from such findings to attack and dismantle the philosophic basis of capitalist economic theory.

Hans Bennett Photoessay: JULY 4 PHILLY DEMONSTRATION FOR MUMIA ABU-JAMAL! (PT.1)

On the 4th of July, 2002 in Philadelphia, supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal gathered at City Hall for a rally and then marched down Market St. to the Liberty Bell to protest Colin Powell receiving the "Liberty Award". Part one of this two-part photo-essay by Hans Bennett, documents the beginning of the day at City Hall. Part two (to be released tomorrow) documents the action at the Liberty Bell.
