The Free Trade Area of the Americas: Historical and Cultural Issues
September 6, the Coalition against Global Exploitation with the Student Labor Action Committee held a teach-in on the Free Trade Area of the Americas and the World Trade Organization in conjunction with upcoming protests in Cancun, Mexico and Miami, Florida. Contributors to the teach-in included Carlos Banuelos (Casa de Maryland), Frida Berrigan (World Policy Institute), Robert Scott (Economic Policy Institute), Len Shindel (United Steel Workers), and Jack Sinnigen (University of Maryland). More than 70 attended the teach-in which was held at Johns Hopkins University. What follows are the remarks of Jack Sinnigen.

Selective Service? It has precedence, purpose and support. It is not something "I personally" would approve of, I am simply putting forward what "they must" do. What will all those "true-believers," waving Chinese made American flags, and wrapping yellow ribbons ‘round the ole Oak tree...say? Being proper American patriots, proper parents too, which support their president...they will send their children off to war and many to their deaths and worse.

"Defense Planning Guidance” (DPG) for realigning U.S. forces globally so as to “retain pre-eminent responsibility for addressing selectively those wrongs which threaten not only our own interests, but those of our allies or friends, or which could seriously unsettle international relations."

Empire may mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Again, it may even be difficult to define today (so I’ve been told) for some. But I may have less of a problem with it than most and not because I am so darn smart. Simply because I have little allegiance to anything except liberty and I concern myself only about what “is.”
