The US invasion of Iraq was primarily an operation to reassert US power and control over oil supplies. Fault lines in the 'international (capitalist) community' have developed. This article seeks to contextualize the recent US war on Iraq within the geo-political economy that has shaped US foreign policy since the Iran-Iraq War (1981-1988).
