With the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, U.S. citizens for the first time felt vulnerable. The shocking dimension of the attack brought sympathy from around the world. According to Immanuel Wallerstein, the Bush administration has, in a 18 months, squandered that sympathy, isolating the U.S. internationally.
